James Flanagan

Industrial drops of steel worked with a plasma cutter and forge are James Flanagan’s favorite creative avenue. He captures familiar forms to preserve that “moment in time” or a certain  “pose,” through the use of an unexpected material: metal. This exploration into the “immortality of metal”, as James puts it, combines traditional smithing with modern cutting techniques. While he was getting his Degree in Interior Design from LSU, James apprenticed and worked as a blacksmith. Now he runs a plasma cutting machine, which enables him to create anything from large sculptures and furniture, to smaller works and even portraits.  This blending of new and old allows James to approach material and form in a unique way.
